This study aims to explore the intrinsic relationship between leisure and happiness through a graphic elicitation method. Drawings of three happiest moments and descriptions of them were collected among 132 college students in a course from 2015 to 2017 in a key university in eastern China. When, where, why and with whom do they feel the happiest, and what activities make them feel the happiest were analyzed. Then, leisure elements and implied psychological factors bringing happiness were interpreted. The study reveals that the happiest moments are closely related to leisure time, leisure space and leisure activities. Relaxation, tranquility, achievement, autonomy, relatedness and interest are identified as significant mechanisms bringing happiness. Practical suggestions are made to improve people’s leisure participation and thereby happiness.

This research aimed to interpret motivations of tourists for agritourism in Fiji. Data was collected through a paper-based face to face survey. Structured questionnaires were administered to a convenience sample of tourists at the two international airports. Descriptive and factorial statistics reveal seven principal factors that motivate and influence visitor preferences for agritourism venues. Most tourists seemed interested in agritourism but presently were unaware of the existence of such venues in Fiji. Findings also suggest that tourists preferred a short stay at working farms offering value for money experience. In terms of importance, hospitality followed by entertainment, were the two main desired services for an agritourism venue. This research offers insights for dynamic product development for the Fijian and Pan-Pacific agritourism industry.

Humankind is increasingly able to travel into outer space. Launch costs have decreased; launch frequencies have increased. These changes are primarily occurring due to private companies becoming heavily involved in space-related activities. Prior discussions of humankind's growing influence beyond the biosphere have begun elucidating the species-wide benefits and issues that are concomitant with the development of outer space. Yet, spacecraft are developed at and launched from specific geographic locations, and there is little research regarding how local communities are intertwined with the commercialisation of the cosmos. The present study is motivated by the need to extend the global-local nexus, thereby moving beyond a global perspective of tourism development. This paper develops the concept of a cosmic-local nexus by examining the context of the Māhia Peninsula, a rural area of Aotearoa New Zealand where Rocket Lab, a private company that manufactures rockets and launches small satellites, has situated its primary launch facility. The cosmic-local nexus is particularly salient in this milieu due to the region's strong Māori ties, the hope that the launch site will contribute to regional tourism development, and the fact that the United States military is one of Rocket Lab's primary customers.

This essay considers school and external factors that influenced a teacher’s decision to pass a high school student, thus allowing him to graduate high school. I explore my role in understanding and then enacting change within the classroom. This article prompts educators to self-reflect on their positionality, moral decision-making, and culturally relevant pedagogies to address inequities within their institutions. This self-study is example of research that informs teachers about the complexities of ethical and moral decision making in the classroom.

While much is written about reading aloud to children, and as a teaching tool, far less is known about the oral reading that adults do at home, at work or in the community. This article presents the results of a national survey into whether, what, how and why adults across Britain may read aloud rather than in silence. Analysing data from 529 questionnaire responses, the article examines the frequency with which different text types are read aloud, the formations in which this is done – alone, with one other person or in a group – and the purposes of reading aloud and being read to, with attention to differences according to gender and age. Findings suggest that reading aloud happens in a number of different ways and for different purposes, across contexts and life domains, and that it has a significant relationship with aspects of the lifecourse and with identity formation and performance.

The underlying thesis of much popular parenting discourse in circulation in western Anglophone countries is that parenting labour has intensified historically, notably in regard to schooling, and that we are witnessing new kinds of parental attitudes and strategies. A related argument holds that parents, especially middle-class parents, have become entrepreneurial agents in their children’s education, and that this activity is a consequence of global neoliberal policy reform. This paper examines the intensification thesis through a study of popular parenting advice in the late pre-neoliberal era, the 1960s and 1970s. It proposes that the rise of intensive school parenting must be understood not only through policy histories of competition, choice and marketisation but also through histories of domestic life, of the material and affective activities of ‘home-making’. The focus is on a collection of parenting advice (including advertisements) published in one mass-market women’s magazine, the Australian Women’s Weekly. Such publications were, the paper argues, significant and exemplary in disseminating forms of advice that encouraged parents, especially mothers, to discover and develop new repertoires of educational child-rearing competencies and to consider themselves as competitors in the educational arena, on behalf of their own children.

This essay explores one man’s life as a person experiencing homelessness and the societal impositions (stigma) and barriers (criminal ordinances) that shape his sense of self and perceived ability to transcend homelessness. The focus is on trying to understand what leisure is – or if it can even exist – for someone experiencing homelessness. As will be demonstrated, much of the societally available resources are lacking (shelters, legal help, access to water and hygiene needs) for those who need them; yet still others are wary of using anything in the ‘system’ because it saps whatever sense of agency they may have left. Still others prefer to stay on the periphery of society and focus solely on their daily survival. As public space is contested and evermore privatized, how do those without spaces of their own fight for their right to exist?

This study has examined the antecedents of adoption of Virtual Reality (VR) among the Indian tourists using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Perceived enjoyment and perceived immersion have been added to the TAM model as two additional antecedents, and their interrelationships and impacts on tourist's intention to adopt VR were examined. Structural equation modelling was used to analyze the responses obtained from 259 respondents. This study has contributed to the literature by establishing interrelationships among the proposed constructs. Further, this study has advanced the TAM in the context of the adoption of VR by Indian tourists while selecting a tourist place.

This study provides a holistic Asian viewpoint of the perceptions of risk and worry encountered by solo women Asian backpackers. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 backpackers. The research followed content analysis to interpret the results. Two groups of backpackers were identified who faced quite different risk-related issues. One group chose to travel alone on their own volition, while the second group travelled alone due to circumstances, typified by a lack of travel partners. Members of both groups identified physical risks, especially related to sexual dimorphism associated with being Asian women. However, members of the second group were more likely to identify with social/psychological and satisfaction risks.

Climate change has affected the rate at which glaciers are receding around the globe. Much of the research on glacier loss has focused on its effects on rising sea levels and water supply. However, studies examining the impact of glacier loss on in situ ecosystem services are quite limited. The Mendenhall Glacier in the Tongass National Forest is an easily accessible glacier that receives over 600,000 visitors annually. While the glacier is currently visible from the visitor centre, it is expected to recede out of sight within the next few decades. Using a choice experiment, tourists are surveyed to estimate a willingness to pay value for slowing the rate of glacier recession. Results indicate that tourists are willing to pay, on average, $648 per year to reduce the annual rate of glacier loss to 0.15km3 over the next 60 years. Willingness to pay for policies to achieve the outcomes differs based on political preference and environmental organisation membership. Nature-based tourists care about preserving glaciers and disagree about the mechanisms for how to accomplish that objective.
